These terms cover the hosted publishing service at share.getgrove.shand this website, provided by Ryan Osgood (“we”). By using the publishing service you agree to them.
The Grove desktop app is free software licensed under the GPL — it is not licensed to you by these terms. Section 1 explains what governs it. The disclaimers below (pre-release status, third-party agents, warranty, liability) are stated for the app as well, because they disclaim our obligations rather than restrict your rights.
1. Licence
The Grove desktop app, viewer, and CLI are free software, licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. You may use them for anything including commercial work, read and modify the source, and redistribute them — modified or not, including for a fee — provided you pass on the same freedoms and the corresponding source. The full licence text ships inside the app and lives in the source repository.
Nothing in these terms restricts, conditions, or revokes the rights the GPL grants you. Where anything here conflicts with that licence, the GPL controls.
Two parts of Grove sit outside the GPL: the ee/ Enterprise Edition components, which carry their own proprietary licence in the source tree, and the hosted relay, which is unpublished. A separate commercial licence that removes the copyleft obligation is available for organisations that cannot accept the GPL — see LICENSING.md.
2. Your content is yours
Grove reads and writes plain files on your disk. You own everything you write in it and everything Grove produces on your behalf, and we claim no ownership over any of it.
When you publish a document, you grant us only the narrow, revocable licence needed to store and serve that document to people holding its link — nothing more. That licence ends when you unpublish it.
3. Pre-release software
Grove is pre-release. It changes quickly, may contain defects, and features can change or be removed between versions. Do not rely on Grove as the only copy of anything you care about. Keep your work under version control or backed up independently.
4. Acceptable use of publishing
You are responsible for what you publish. Do not use the publishing service to host content that is unlawful, infringes someone else’s rights, contains malware, or is intended to harass or defraud. We may remove published content and suspend accounts that violate this, and we may do so without notice where the content is clearly harmful.
The publishing service is offered as a convenience with no uptime guarantee, no support commitment, and no storage guarantee.
5. Third-party agents and tools
Grove launches agent CLIs that you install and authenticate — Claude Code, Codex, opencode, and others. Your use of those tools is governed by their own terms and their own providers. Agents can modify files, run commands, and make changes to your repositories. You are responsible for reviewing what an agent does before you rely on or ship its output. We are not liable for the behaviour or output of third-party agents.
6. Updates
Grove checks for updates and can install them at your direction. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of Grove at any time. We will not push an update that installs itself without your action.
7. No warranty
GROVE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT GROVE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY DATA WILL BE PRESERVED.
8. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR BUSINESS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF GROVE. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE PRECEDING TWELVE MONTHS OR FIFTY US DOLLARS.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow these exclusions, in which case they apply to you only to the extent permitted.
9. Termination
You may stop using Grove at any time by deleting it. We may suspend or terminate your access to the publishing service if you materially breach these terms; on termination you must stop using that service, and sections 7, 8, and 10 survive. Your GPL rights in the app are unaffected — those end only under the GPL’s own terms.
10. General
These terms are the entire agreement between us regarding the publishing service and this website; the app is governed by the GPL as set out in section 1. If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our not enforcing a provision isn’t a waiver of it. We may update these terms; material changes will be reflected in the date above, and continuing to use Grove after that constitutes acceptance.
